The most likely scenario for us is that we will be posting articles provided by our members, but of course we want them to appear from them so that they get full credit.

I've done it. I created a thread then went into the database through phpMyAdmin and changed the user id and name of the post. Then I published to article. I don't suggest doing that unless you're comfortable, though.

I know when I wrote a thread here and then Wayne promoted it to an Article, I was listed as the author and I was able to modify it later on. So, that method works.
