Some of the simplest searches take a few minutes to run. Then on top of that, when those queries are running, it locks up the replication thread on the slave server doing the query (see this post/example). A search that causes the entier site to only be as up to date as when the search started (for all users) isn't really that good.

I wish someone would get Sphinx working with vB4 so I don't have to do it myself.
I think that the reason that nobody has tackled it yet is that vbulletin solutions told us that they had something working that they would release, so nobody wants to waste their time. If they had said nothing I bet there would have been some attempt out there by now.

Did they actually say that, or is that just rumors? Do you know where they said that?

DP - its in the dev chat forum / thread:

[4:31] Kevin Sours: We have a sphinx search working in house here at IB. Its not yet ready to release to the wild, but we do have plans to clean it up and get it out there in some form.

Ah yes... the monthly developer chat. I missed the December, January, February and March one though.

Getting to work in my sphinx search engine for vB4... have a feeling I can code it myself faster than IB will release it. It's pretty amazing how 1.6M threads and 14M posts were indexed via Sphinx in less than 10 minutes. While the internal vB search indexing has been running 5 1/2 days now and it's still not done.

              Hey Shawn,

I dropped you an email regarding sphinx, and whether you require some help to get it done. Please let me know

I should throw out into the open to. I am willing to contribute financially, and with help (I am not a programmer myself but I have some good freelance programmers who I will pay to help) to get sphinx ported. I am not going to hold my breath waiting for vbulletin to fix search, it has sucked for how long now (no offense guys I love you product generally)? And after the promise of vbulletin 4 not coming even close to my personal expectations, I think it is time some of the big board guys throw a few $ and work behind getting this important aspect ported. Anyone looking to do the same feel free to PM me, as I mentioned above I contacted Shawn from digitalpoint looking to throw my weight behind him also. So let us hope we can get this moving!

If you guys prepare something will you release it (free or not)?

I hope I'm mistaken, but I don't expect the official one to be ready any time soon.

How are you doing on the "Sphinx"? The vB Search is absolutely Rubbish and I am not overly keen on the vB4 versions at all.

                      Search is your friend.....

Well, maybe not, but it works for you this time.

                      vbulletin "unofficially" officially blessed sphinx.

                      Good luck.

That Search has brought no results.

I have a dedicated search box on two seperate threads that bring up individual "Posts" results that works great in 3.8.X But I cannot get one to work in vB4.0.X.

Please view my thread here: http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showt...-of-my-threads...

I would appreciate any help and input on this please.

                        Many Thanks.

                          weird, it worked for me.

I copied the link and posted it, and now it doesn't work.

Here, let's try it again. I've saved my search preferences, so I don't recall what the vbdefaults are....

Go to advanced search, click on title's only and show by date.....

Welshy, don't be afraid to get your hand dirty

It's not actually as hard as it looks. I implemented it on my site this morning.

Provided you make a backup and know some standard ssh commands it's pretty straight forward.
