How to Backup before Upgrading to 4.0

Host or You, either way a full backup is always best.

Also make sure to test the backup at a test forum after you make before making any big changes to your forum. As to make totally sure that it works as it should if things don''t go as planned and you need to revert your forum back.

Well think of it this way... was it your first time backing up? Have you tested ANY backups you or your hosts has made in the past?

Depending on how you backed up you might have selected the wrong checkbox when exporting, the Hosts backup could be corrupted without you or them knowing for whatever reason...

SO THE BEST BET IS TO ALWAYS TEST YOUR BACKUP OTHERWISE YOUR NEVER SURE IF IT WILL WORK NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES YOU HAVE DONE THIS IN THE PAST SOMETHING OR ANYTHING COULD HAVE GONE WRONG WHEN MAKING THE BACKUP. AND PLEASE NO MATTER WHO YOU ARE OR YOUR SKILL LEVEL I DON'T CARE IF YOUR ABOVE ME AND LAUGH AT WHAT I SAY BUT TO NOT DO BACKUPS ON A REGULAR BASIS IS SIMPLY CARELESS - PLEASE EVERYONE AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK TO BE SAFE, I HAD A NEW CLIENT YESTERDAY TELL ME HE HAD NEVER RUN A BACKUP... SO 2+ YEARS HE HAS PUT INTO HIS FORUM YET AT ANYTIME IF SOMETHING WENT WRONG IT COULD ALL BE LOST??? COME ON NOW BE GOOD TO YOURSELVES OK?

Ricardo, installing php, apache and mysql etc on your PC is fine if you want to tinker around before modifying the live site but remember your not running the same setup your host is so best bet is to make the test site on the server with the live site .

Try mysqdumper or ssh.

Type in the following to create a backup in the current directory:

You will be prompted for the database password. Enter it and the database will backup.

I've upgraded from 3.8.4 to 4.0.1. Just discovered yesterday that I can't find the "backup" option in the admin cp that used to be there and then found another thread saying it's been removed. The manual seems to recommend something called "PuTTy" to backup but there's very little information there and I don't see much on this thread either.

Anyone using the vBulletin recommended method (PuTTy) to backup and if not, why not? What's the problem with it?

You can use Putty only if you have SSH or Telnet access to your site. If you don''t have, then I would recommend phpmyadmin but they have file size limits so for large databases it would be best to use mysqldumper.

Sorry for the late reply but SSH is not FileZilla and nor can you use FileZilla to SSH.
