The best way is to copy the site and setup a test site as Hartmut mentioned above.

    1) Clone (copy i.e. backup) the live 3.8.7 site this includes a copy of the 3.8 files and a backup of the database.
    2) Make a new database (add a user and grant all permissions) and folder on your site for example if the current 3.8 forum url is www.mysite.com/forums/index.php then you would place the test site in a folder such as www/mysite.com/testvb/ .
    3) Import the backup data into a completely new database, upload the copied files (all except config.php in the /includes/ folder) to the /testvb/ folder.
    4) **Edit** the config.php to reflect the new database name and password then upload to the /testvb/includes/ folder.
    5) Enter the url into your browser example per the above www.mysite.com/testvb/index.php to see if the site is up and running however it being the copy! If the site is running login and edit the Site URL in AdminCP > Settings > Options > *Site Name/URL/Contact Details.
    6) If everything checks out and your 100% sure the config.php file in the new testvb instance is correct and connected to the new copied database then simply upload the 4.2 files and run the upgrade script. Once completed you'll have a 4.2 test site, then you can install your newly purchased style and more .

Basically i want to know if restoring a 3.8.7 database on a 4.2 via phpmyadmin will work well, aren't any sql changes that could influence the process?

    Upgrade from 3.8.7 to 4.2

Sorry to start a new thread about this but i've searched and didn't get the answer i was looking for. The idea is that my forum currently runs on 3.8.7 but i decided to finally go for the upgrade. What bothers me is that the original version got a customized template which is definitely not compatible with 4.2. So i got a custom theme for the new forum as well. However before going live with the upgrade i want to do some tests so i can see how the new design will look like, that is why i want to know what's the easiest way to restore a copy of the 3.8.7 vb on a 4.2? Is there any way to do it?
