    [Forum] Upgrading to 4.2

I am trying to upgrade from 4.1.10 to 4.2 and have so far only succeeded in downing my site

I have never done this before and the process seems to be extremely difficult and opaque.

Are there any useful guides available?

I have tried following the only guide I can find but it seems to apply to VB 3.x where the download is extracted into two folder "upload" and "do not upload".

That's not what I have experienced so far.

Also I think I have seen a slick script for doing the upgrades on youtube but I can't find this anywhere.

    Please can someone help?

    My site is https://www.black-markets.co.uk/

I am not a great developer and this is basically a hobby for me, my host used to be really good and do this for me but they seem to have outsourced their support team recently and things have dropped off a cliff. Can anyone help me fix my site whilst I look for a new host?

    Cheers guys

The vBulletin download package should still have an upload and a do_not_upload folder. It also comes with a readme file with basic installation instructions. You can also view our documentation for upgrading here.

Are there any specific questions or problems that you are having?

      OK,

When I download patch 4.1.11 I get a zip file called

      "vb_patch4111suite_XXXXXXXXXX"

When I extract all the files from this zip I get 2 folders.

      "clientscript"
      "includes"

The guide says I should get two folders called

      "upload"
      "do_not_upload"

I am simply not getting this. The guide is impossible for me to follow.

What do I do with "clientscript" and "includes"?

Well I have uploaded both of these folders to a directory called "public_html" and then I have entered the address

      "/public_html/clientscript/ckeditor/ckeditor.js"

into my browser address bar and hit go.

Then the version bar at the top of my admincp updated to 4.1.11??? Job done??? I don't know if what I did was right or not???

So I then tried 4.1.12 I downloaded the zip file and extracted the contents to reveal...

      "forumrunner"
      "includes"
      "install"
      "packages"
      "api.php"

So once again I upload these files to public_html and then I enter the address for the api.php into my browser and my admincp updates the version bar to 4.1.12.

I think what I am doing is correct as it seems to fit with the outdated guide and the version bar at the top of admincp is recognizing my updates.

      So then onto 4.2.0

I download and extract the zip and once again I DO NOT get "upload" and "do_not_upload"

      I get

      "includes"
      "install"
      "vb"

So I upload these folders to my site and I enter the address for init.php into my address bar and hit go and my admincp version bar updates to version 4.2.0

Then I go back to my site and I get this horrible error saying all of my tables are broken and my site is entirely offline.

      What have I done wrong?
What do I need to do differently?

I feel the guide is basically useless as the extracted files are completely different to the guide.

      Please help!!!

You downloaded the patch, to download your version:

        - first login to the member area then beside your license you will find a link 'Download vBulletin 4.x Publishing Suite'
        - when you click on it, it will redirect you to new form choose 'Download Latest Version 4.2.0 Patch Level 2'
        - agree to vBulletin terms before you click the download button.
        - It will take 2-3 seconds to generate your copy. Then proceed with the instructions Matthew gave it to you.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns

After downloading the latest version to your pc, unzip it and upload the contents inside the upload folder to your forum root preserving the structure intact. In your case that would be directly in the root of the /www/ or /public_html/ folder

Then run the upgrade. But first do not forget to make a thorough backup of your database.

Lol, well I've completely goosed my site.

I'm not worried about the content or the history as it was a fairly new forum but I spent ages working on the stylevars, css and custom formatting, anyway to salvage those?

I tried to follow the advice but my host, Global Gold, would not let me upload more than 500 files at a time, or any single file greater than 2MB.

So I tried to extract the files on my home pc and upload them in 20-30 phases and then perform the update and the result was horrible.

            No CMS.
            No Blogs.
            No Navbar.

It looks like a dogs dinner of the mobile styles. But the Navbar missing is just a disaster.

Oh well, I know when to beat a retreat.

I'm arranging a domain transfer to URLJet who seem to be vbulletin specialists. Which Global Gold used to be but they have since outsourced their support facility, forcing me to attempt this alone and losing everything in the process.

An unmitigated disaster on all accounts.

Also I am trying to monetize my mobile apps as I'm getting something like 1,500 downloads a day on Android and 200 a day on iPhone, but every avenue I try seems to be riddled with difficulty. Really wanted RevMobs as I have 1,000 people a day looking for free games.

That's getting on for $500,000 revenue a year. But nobody will help me adapt the APK. Not even if I pay for it.

I only need to add 1 single line of code! Before it is compiled.

            What a frustrating week!!

The upgrade script is very easy to use and do not harm your forum or your database. Please make sure you have all files uploaded correctly.
check your admin control panel -> Maintenance -> Diagnostics -> Suspect File Versions to make sure all files uploaded in order.

Changed host to URLJet and they have rescued my site and repaired my database! Brilliant.

A stark contrast the my previous host Global Gold who did nothing and were unwilling to help in any way at all.

I am going from same version to the new 4.2.0, but I am about to upload the files and use the overwrite method, however I have custom work done for look and feel and some add-ons, is this going to blow that away? I am a bit scared, never had to do this before and don't want to lose my customizations. Thanks!

You did the best thing ever there, URL Jet are the best for vB and will help in every way they can with your hosted vB.
