[Forum] Import content of 3.8.4 to 4.x ?

Hello,

i would like to do the following. We have a Forum (3.8.4) running, and I want to make a complete fresh start with 4.x (current) but would rather have a fresh install of 4.x and then import the Users, Thread etc. manually via PhpMyAdmin.

Is that possible or do I need to do it a different way ?

Don't import tables from one database to another...

- Install 3.8.6 on your site using a new database
- Use Impex to move the relevant information to the new installation
- Upload the 4.0.8 files overwriting the new 3.8.6 install
- Run the upgrade script

Is that the same procedure when I am installing the vB 408 (Suite) or does only count if I use the vB 408 (Forum) ?

Currently its only 3.8.4 (Forum) and its going to be the 4.0.8 (Suite). Does the same installation rules apply then ?

Won't matter. Use Impex to transfer to 3.8.6 first then upgrade to 4.0.8 PS.

Ok, i have done it exactly the way you said. Unfortunately, when I installed the fresh 3.8.6 PL1, I created a new Admin User, one that I didn't had in my old Board which I imported afterwards. I did that because I remembered from some other Forum Software that there were problems when a user already existing, will be imported from an old Board. So I thought I don't have to do that here.

After I imported the old 3.8.4 with Impex, which went without many problems, I uploaded/overwritten the 4.0.8 Suite and ran the upgrade Script. That also worked without a problem. But now I can't login really. I tried with that admin user I created on the fresh 3.8.6 PL1, it didn't work. And the old one also don't work really.

What happend and how can I fix it ? And please, if possible, don't tell me I have to start all over again.

Have you tried resetting the password? Also, try this. Browse to your forum and log out if you aren't already. Register as a new user and login as this user.

In the vBulletin's .zip file you can find a directory called 'do_not_upload/'. Inside this directory is a file called 'tools.php'. Upload this file into your forum's admincp/ directory.

Then go to the admincp/tools.php with your browser.

At the bottom of the tools page is an option to 'Reset Admin Access'. Run it with the just newly registered username.

You have just made yourself admin. And you need this because you should now login to the admincp/ and find the user who's password you've lost. Search for this user and when found you will see the whole profile. Including a password field.

Set a new password.

Go to the main forum and log out as the new user, and try to login with the old admin account. This should work now. If it does not work contact vBulletin Support again.

When it works, go back into the admin control panel and find the newly registered user. The profile page will have a dropdown in the top, from there select delete and delete the temporary admin.

Then delete the tools.php file. It is a potential security risk if you leave it on-line.

If you want to import the content for a "fresh start" you're going to waste more time importing than you would just uninstalling old addons and upgrading the software.

Your ids will change for:
Users
Threads
Posts
Forums
Attachments

Permissions/configuration will not carry over for:
Settings
Usergroup permissions
Forum Permissions
Access Masks
Attachments permissions
Blogs

In general no third party addon content will carry over.

Why would you not just upgrade?

Uninstall the addons, run the upgrade.
