  • [Forum] Direct database query to reset admin password

    @@@@ SPOILER/ANSWER @@@@
    UPDATE user
    set password = MD5(concat(MD5('<NEWPASSWORD>'), user.salt))
    WHERE userid = <USERID>
    @@@@@@@@@@@@@

What query will allow me to reset my admin password directly in the database?

Please don't tell me to use the lost password function or the tools.php as neither has worked for me yet.

    I've tried:

    mysql> UPDATE forum.user SET password=MD5('n3wpasswd') WHERE userid = 1;

Query OK, 1 row affected (0.00 sec)
    Rows matched: 1 Changed: 1 Warnings: 0

Is the password seeded or ??

    Thanks

    The actual query would be:

    UPDATE user
    set password = MD5(concat(MD5('<NEWPASSWORD>'), user.salt))
    WHERE userid = <USERID>

        The official vBulletin way:

        Register as a new user.
        Upload tools to admincp/
        Run tools.php from the browser
        reset the account to admin.
        Login as that admin
change the details of the lost admin account
        remove the tools.php
remove the temporary new admin account

So what happens when emails don't go out, you use the tools.php and it lets you type in a number and press the button, but then reloads the same page? (that might be the intended use, but it doesn't say anything, seems like nothing happened).

I'm happy for the re-post, as it is available in multiple other places, but I was down to the nitty gritty and Wayne's answer was exactly what I asked for and needed. Thanks Wayne!

Now the next step is to figure out how to decrease/speed up page load times, it seems really slow and I have 10% of the active users today that I will have in a month.

The account you restore as admin can even be banned, doesn't matter. tools is just a way to get any user a ful fledged admin, and since its a new user you reigstered, you know the pass .. giving you xs back into the account.

              Wayne,

I cannot do tools.php because something happened, and the image verification captcha is messed up.

I was going to do it through php my admin, using the code you provided, but do I leave the <> symbols and put the info in between them, or do I delete them?

You would not include those symbols.

If you need further help, please start your own thread, as this one is almost six years old and the information contained in it may not be up to date.

                  Hey,
I just tried to use this - but it does not work in 5.5.3 Alpha 4. Anything has changed?
Paul M. 14.12.2012: You already know vB4 isnt being worked on atm, so of course no bugs are going to have been fixed in the last few months, nor are they going to get fixed "now".

That’s because it’s in the vBulletin 4 forum.

Please start your own thread in the vB5 section, with full details of the problem, so we can help effectively.

vBulletin 5 uses industry standard password hashing. This is a lot more advanced than the password storage in vBulletin 4.
