site hacked = options?

The site I've got was hacked. It was the 3.8. The hosting provider still got the database, so users and topics are safe, I presume. The forum is now gone, since the provider made a new account, so I have to start from scratch basically.

I was wondering what options I have. Is there anywhere an install for 3.8 with perhaps extra's so it won't get hacked anymore? Or is 3.8 past history?

Any help would be very much appreciated!

If you're starting from scratch, I suggest going to the latest version, which is 4.2.0.

You will need to purchase a vBulletin 4 license in order to download vBulletin 4.2.0.

If your hosting does have a backup of the database then you don''t have to start from scratch.

Personally I would advice you to go with the latest version, 4.2.0 pl2.

I think that you will have to pay to renew your license to be able to download the 4.1x4.2x versions.

What do you mean when you say: "The forum is now gone, since the provider made a new account".

If you go with the latest version, install it and then restore the 3.8 database backup. Then run the upgrader to bring the db up to date with the forum files.

I meant that there was nothing left since the provider deleted everything.

We do have an old programme of 3.8, so now we're installing that. Are there any upates released to make 3.8 saver?

vBulletin 3.8.7 Patch Level 4 is the safest in the vBulletin 3 series.

Ok, I've installed the 3.8 again. Now I've got the problem that the database is really big. My hosting provider says that 2-3 MB is normal, but mine is 300 MB. I don't know what's normal or not. Anyway, he said that I should use Bigdump, so I can upload the database, but now I get this error message:

That error is because you are restoring to a database which has already the tables. And the backup was not made with the DROP TABLE If EXISTS table_name command. Drop all the tables from the database and then give the restore another go. Bigdump.php handles large files quite well.

You are welcome

You can drop the tables from the database providing that they are those from the fresh install. Then try to restore the backup and see how thing will go.

I couldn't figure out how to do that, so I removed the entire database and made a new one, but I keep getting that error. Any ideas? I thought a new database has no tables or am I wrong about that?

All you have to do is drop the tables. To do that select all the tables from phpmyadmin and all the way to the bottom at the dropdown option where it says: "With Selected:" choose for Drop.

Anyway, if you still have trouble with dropping the tables, create a new database but do not install vb. Instead go ahead with the restore of the db and then update the config.php file with the db details.
