VB 3.8 Cant Create Thumbnails

OK

moved a board from PHPBB to VB

All the settings are correct, uploads work fine, added to post.

But cannot create thumbnails, the errors below are less then helpful

Had a read of the Misc.php and looks like the TMP dir is used but no error, I only have ftp access to the server
Building Attachment ThumbnailsIf you receive a fatal error or if the process seems to hang, you will need to delete the last attachment listed on the screen then refresh this window.

If you're using PHP 5.4, you need to be using vBulletin 3.8.8 Beta. Otherwise there is an error in how GD is used that causes this problem. If you're using PHP 5.3, then you need to be on vBulletin 3.8.5 to 3.8.7.
