  • Upgrading MySQL 4 db to MySQL 5 with version 3.8

I have vbulletin version 3.8 installed using a MySQL 4 database, and my server is upgrading to MySQL 5 and I need to switch.

I exported the database and imported it into a new MySQL 5 database via ssh command line, and changed the database un/pw/port in the config.php file, but vbulletin cant access it.

Do you have ideas what I am doing wrong? Only have 3 days to fix this before MySQL 4 is removed from the server.

What do you mean vBulletin can't access it?

I mean vBulletin refuses to access the database, returns the basic error

Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql5.sock:3316'
vBulletin 3.8 was out way before MySQL 5 was out, I am wondering if it can even connect at all.

See this page for the causes of this error: http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/cantconnect
You will most likely need to talk to your host in order to fix the issue.

Everything seems to be working just fine now, thanks.

In case anyone else has 1and1 hosting, I had to set the host to 'localhost' and port to '/tmp/mysql5.sock' to get it to work. Setting port to the actual port number failed. This means vb began calling it as 'localhost:/tmp/mysql5.sock' instead of 'localhost:/tmp/mysql5.sock:3316'

Under most normal cases, its either a socket, or a port, not both. That is really weird.

1and1 is NOT a normal host nor do they provide normal servers with industry standard settings. I used them for a whole week and will NEVER go back.
