  • New users cant register

A problem seems to have arisen today with my forum in that new users cannot register. I had a couple of email reports stating so and tested it myself.

On hitting the complete registration button the software seems to get stuck on register.php hangs for about a minute then just resets.

I had my host run a database repair and optimise which didn't fix the problem. I do have some basic plugins plus vbseo but nothing new has been added for months and the problem has only arisen today.

All other aspects of the forum are running fine. I'm running 3.8.7

    Any ideas?

Hard to say what happened but let's start with the basics.

To troubleshoot this, first reupload all the original vB non-image files (except install.php). Make sure you upload these in ASCII format and overwrite the ones on the server. Also be sure to upload the admincp files to whichever directory you have set in your config.php file. Then run 'Suspect File Versions' in Diagnostics to make sure you have all the original files for your version and that none show 'File does not contain expected contents':

Admin CP -> Maintenance -> Diagnostics -> Suspect File Versions

[Note: In some cases you may also need to remove any of the listed .xml files in the includes/xml directory.]

Next, disable all products (except vB Blog, vB CMS and Skimlinks if you have them.)

Admin CP -> Plugins & Products -> Manage Products -> Disable

Then manually uncheck all plugins that are not for 'vBulletin Blog' and vBulletin CMS' here:

Admin CP -> Plugins & Products -> Plugin Manager

You must do BOTH of those steps in order to disable all non vBulletin Modifications.

Then if you still have this problem, create a new style and choose no parent style. This will force it to use the default templates. Finally empty your browser cache, close all browser windows then try again. Make sure you change to the new style and view your forums with it.

Do you have the same problem?

Ouch! some fun ahead of me. I'll give all that a go and report back.

I ran the suspect file versions in Diagnostics before uploading and overwriting and found lots of instances of:

File version mismatch: found 3.8.6, expected 3.8.7 Patch Level 1
So, I expect that's going to be where the problem lies.

Upload the 3.8.7 files and upgrade.

vB5 is unequivocally the best forum software, but not yet...

Ok registrations are now working again.

I did have some out of date files, but I don't think this was the root of my problem.

One of the few plugins I have is VBstopforumspam which cross checks new registrations for known spammers against the database at

Even after the VB files were upgraded I noticed that with the anti spam plug in activated the registration failure problem was still there. When I disabled the plugin registration went through fine.

I just checked and the site is down so this is where the system was encountering the problem. It was trying to cross check a database that wasn't resolving and timing out due to that.

Yep, SFS has been down about 10 hours.
