Is there a rule of thumb for when you should switch from keeping attachments in the database vs keepting them outside the database?

If your host limits the size of your database, or you're starting to get a larger number of attachments (or you allow larger sized attachments), I'd move them to the file system.
There's no hard and fast rule for it but performance tends to be better in the files. -
Thanks for your response Trevor. I run multiple servers and I host my forums and other folks VB forums, so no issues with the 'host'.
My database on my biggest forum has recently went over 4 gigs. I'm thinking keeping the attachments outside the DB will speed up the backup db process and maintenance processes when I need to run repair / optimize tables (as I had to last weekend).
I presume that once I've removed the attachments from the DB there is no going back. It's a done deal. Is there a down side to keeping attachments outside the DB? I'm thinking there has to be a downside of some type. For instance does it take longer for threads with lots of images to load if the images are stored outside the DB?Comment

You can opt to move them back also.
They should actually load slightly quicker from the filesystem rather that the database, hwoever every server is different...Comment

i ran into my hoster complaining about too much storage useage on the server, using too many gigs due to my attached files, i can get by with purging the older attachments, but how do i go about moving them from database to files? this would help me out alot with my hoster and storage problem. they are wanting me to upgrade to another tier on their webhosting. like another $40 a month.Comment

If I change it in the admincp to store attachments into the filesystem, does it transfer attachments that are existing in the db to the file system?
