CHMOD setting permissions for Files and Folders

I did a search but was unable to find an answer. Also looked at the installation manual but did not see specifics.

What are the permission settings on Linux for the respective files and folders for VBulletin? Are there specific exceptions for specific files or folders that MUST be one way and one way only?

My site seemed to have some difficulty functioning after upgrading from 3.8.4 to 3.8.6 based on certain permission settings. Id really like to know what the permissions need to be, especially if there are multiple options. And also what is absolutely not advised no matter what.

    Thanks.

It really depends on the server, but in general the directories should be 755 and the files 644.

What specific problem or error are you getting?

I was getting a lot of weird inoperable functions seemingly related to images not displaying and also JavaScript(?) issues like the admincp dropdowns not working, WYSIWYG editor buttons not working, no proper pagination in posts, and a few custom custom JavaScript navbar dropdowns I have.

I had files set to 644 but ALL problems seemed to rectify themselves when files were changed to 755 like the folders.

      Any ideas, comments, and suggestions?

I ran into these issues after upgrading to 3.8.6. I don't recall what the permissions were set at before I upgraded. This is a Linux VPS server at WiredTree running WHM/CPanel.

If 755 works, then use that. This is what I meant when I said it depends on the server.

Gotcha. Yeah, I am experiencing no functionality issues I know of at the moment with files at 755. I just wanted to make sure files at 755 was not a security risk.

Thats the folders, but what about the files. Right now my files only seem to function okay at 755.

If it functions like that, then leave it. That should not be a security risk, in and of itself.
