users see "banned" message when viewing subscriptions?

Admin CP -> Paid Subscriptions -> Subscription Permissions -> Can Use Subscription

Page? Sorry I still don't know what you mean. In order to help you will need to be more specific.

However assuming you have not installed any add-ons this is a simple permissions issue. Have you installed any add-ons?

people are getting the error when trying to subscribe/unsubscribe from a thread.

also showing when they go to user cp -> list subscribed threads

To troubleshoot this, first reupload all the original vB non-image files (except install.php). Make sure you upload these in ASCII format and overwrite the ones on the server. Also be sure to upload the admincp files to whichever directory you have set in your config.php file. Then run 'Suspect File Versions' in Diagnostics to make sure you have all the original files for your version and that none show 'File does not contain expected contents':

Admin CP -> Maintenance -> Diagnostics -> Suspect File Versions

[Note: In some cases you may also need to remove any of the listed .xml files in the includes/xml directory.]

Next, disable all plugins.

Note: To temporarily disable the plugin system, edit config.php and add this line right under <?php

define('DISABLE_HOOKS', true);

Then if you still have this problem, create a new style and choose no parent style. This will force it to use the default templates. Finally tell them to empty their browser cache, close all browser windows then try again. Make sure they change to the new style and view your forums with it.

Any modification would cause this. You should follow the instructions in post #8 and see if you still have this problem.

that will be the next step we're going to try, but is there a setting in User Group permissions that would cause activity like this? I'm thinking this may have changed recently, while our mods haven't..

in admin cp you can manage permissions for user groups. for regular users, for mods, etc. for example, they can have permission to rate threads, permission to post threads, etc. is there any setting there that corresponds to the error message people are getting?

it's only affecting one usergroup which is why I suspect this
