Perform operation with two user fields?

Hello,

I have two user fields and I'd like to put them in an mktime function call and output the result in the postbit. Is there a way to execute a php function within a template or would I have to go about this another way?

Can I pass variables into it? This is what I'm trying to do.

$years = round((time()-mktime(0,0,0,$post['field9'],1,$post['field8']))/31536000,1);

Then I want to use $years in the postbit.
