  • Changing Database Server

    Hi,

I setup our vB install yesterday on the same server I've been running out old Vanilla forum on. I've been getting regular server errors and been told by our host that the database server we're using is under heavy load and I should create a database on one of their other servers.

Now, I've asked them to set that up for me on their best server so in the mean time I need to find out how to make the switch.
    The forum isn't yet 'open' as such, I've got a few people testing it so its not a massive issue for users at the moment. I'm guessing the process will be fairly simple but please correct me if i'm wrong;

    - Close forum/enter maintenance mode
    - Backup database
    - Upload tables to new database
    - Reconfigure the database settings in the admincp

will that be the best way of doing it? and also, where in the admincp are the database settings?
    thanks.

Instructions for moving servers are in the online manual here:

    http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/moving_servers

Note: The only reliable method of backing up and restoring a database is with shell access via telnet or ssh. This is because backing up with a PHP script like that in the Admin CP or phpMyAdmin can result in PHP timeouts errors and an incomplete backup file. Please see the instructions here:

    Backup:
    http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/m...nce_ssh_backup

    Restore:
    http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/m...ce_ssh_restore

P.S. If you do not have telnet or SSH access, some people have reported success with these scripts:

    MySQLDumper:
    http://www.mysqldumper.de/en/index.php

    MySQLHotxcopy:
    http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showt...t=mysqlhotcopy

    Bigdump (restore only):
