    What do I need to do to enable a minimum character search of 3 characters?

    That depends on your search type which is is set here:

    Admin CP -> vBulletin Options -> Search Type


    If you are using the default vB search option you can change the character length settings here:

    Admin CP -> vBulletin Options -> Message Searching Options -> Search Index Minimum Word Length and Search Index Maximum Word Length

    You will need to rebuild the search index after doing this.

    Note: Common words are not indexed. You can see which words these are in the includes/searchwords.php file.

    If you are running Fulltext search, the MySQL fulltext search has a 4 character minimum word length by default. This can only be changed on the server level. There are also a number of 'stopwords' that are considered common and not indexed.
