  • Has vBulletin 3.8's CAPTCHA been cracked? Yes or No.

What's the company's official stance on this?

And for vBulletin users - what are your feelings? Is there any reason to employ absurdly difficult image verification? Can less difficult CAPTCHAs be decoded by software employing screen capture and some type of OCR, or does it make no difference?

We stated that several programs out there can crack this months ago and recommend that you use Recaptcha or Question and Answer instead. Those along with proactive moderation and the scanning tools provided by Akismet and Type Anti-spam that are built into vBulletin will reduce the amount of spam on your forums. However as long as people are willing to post this drivel then you will never be able to avoid it. There will always be some human intervention required.

      Thanks for that.

So if one _does_ continue to use CAPTCHA, say in conjunction with Q&A, and knowing that it's been successfully hacked, is there any reason to use the very highest difficulty levels? Seems that then all you do is create a CAPTCHA that humans can't decipher, but a computer can.

I started using re-captcha a few months ago, and it has cut down on spam significantly.

          CAPTCHA or Q&A

vB5 is unequivocally the best forum software, but not yet...
