  • image.php issue after upgrade to 3.8.7, most avatars missing

Just upgraded from 3.8.4 Patch Level 1 to 3.8.7, seems to have mostly gone fine. Reverted templates etc and we don't have any major mods. But I noticed that most people's avatars aren't showing. In firefox they just have the text description and in IE8 they have an actual red-X image-missing box. Avatars are stored in the database, and like I said, SOME work, but most don't. I couldn't see anything obvious about the ones that did work. Anyway, as a test I reverted image.php back to the previous one we were using (3.8.4 PL1) and now all avatars work fine again. Strange.. any ideas?

Wow, I really don't see why that would happen. Do you have any add-ons installed?

Nope, we don't have any plugins or other products installed. The theme is custom colours and different icons etc but really nothing major. The file versions are all correct according to admincp (apart from the older image.php at the moment) and it was a full new copy of the software downloaded yesterday, with just the image dirs copied over from our old install.

        Let's start with the basics.

To troubleshoot this, first reupload all the original vB non-image files (except install.php). Make sure you upload these in ASCII format and overwrite the ones on the server. Also be sure to upload the admincp files to whichever directory you have set in your config.php file. Then run 'Suspect File Versions' in Diagnostics to make sure you have all the original files for your version and that none show 'File does not contain expected contents':

Admin CP -> Maintenance -> Diagnostics -> Suspect File Versions

[Note: In some cases you may also need to remove any of the listed .xml files in the includes/xml directory.]

Next, disable all products (except vB Blog, vB CMS and Skimlinks if you have them.)

Admin CP -> Plugins & Products -> Manage Products -> Disable

Then manually uncheck all plugins that are not for 'vBulletin Blog' and vBulletin CMS' here:

Admin CP -> Plugins & Products -> Plugin Manager

You must do BOTH of those steps in order to disable all non vBulletin Modifications.

Then if you still have this problem, create a new style and choose no parent style. This will force it to use the default templates. Finally empty your browser cache, close all browser windows then try again. Make sure you change to the new style and view your forums with it.

Do you have the same problem?
