  • Moving my VB installation from localhost to web hosting - will this be a new install?

I've customized my forum extensively working from my localhost server and now am ready to upload it to my registered domain, and am wondering if this should be treated as a new install.

I read the manual regarding Moving Servers, but moving from domain to domain (from http://localhost to http://weburl) might involve a bit more than moving from one host to another.

Anything I should be particularly mindful of? Should I treat this as a new install?

Localhost is just a domain technically; what did you customize "extensively" to make it work on localhost?

All it needed is a config.php reference to a database, and your vboptions bburl / domain was pointing to localhost urls. You can still dump the database and restore it onto your new actual host to keep all the modifications from your localhost environment; and re-upload the same files. The moving servers guide still applies in this case.

Maybe it's me, but I don't understand the instructions in the manual when it says to type this and that using Telnet/SSH:

1 Telnet/SSH into machine1 if you have not already.

      2 Type: ftp MACHINE2

      3 Type: the following:
      asc
      cd /PATH/TO/NEW/DIRECTORY
      put /PATH/TO/DUMP.SQL
Where are these commands entered? In the CMD prompt of Windows?

I'm using SmartFTP and I don't see anywhere there where command inputs are entered.

Can someone please point out what is not clear to me here?

      TIA

You can't do that with FTP. You need telnet or SSH access to the server.
