    • Creating a New MySQL Database for 'testvB' vBulletin to Use
    • Backup and download home (FTP Client drag folder public_html and or httpdoc and or www onto your desktop)
    • Backup your database using
    • Download your style(s) onto your computer
    • Open folder that you downloaded to Desktop and within public_html\forum and or httpdoc\forum and rename 'forum' folder to 'testvb'
    • Edit file within folder testvb\includes\config.php and add new database name
      PHP Code:
          //    ****** DATABASE NAME ******
//    This is the name of the database where your vBulletin will be located.
//    This must be created by your webhost.
      $config['Database']['dbname'] = 'forum'
    • Upload folder 'testvb' to under top directory of public_html and or httpdoc (Where you add vBulletin file on host)
    • Restore databse using
    • Add .htaccess file within 'testvb' directory or apply it using host control panel options
How to create a .htaccess file extention
You do not need to download and or install any software or hardware product to create an htaccess file. Basically all you want to use is your default systems text editor program such as 'Notepad'

The only difficult part in saving file with extension name .htaccess is that if your system can accept a no-name filename with a long string extension.
      ".htaccess"

      # Open text editor 'Notepad'
      # Add your mod_rewrite for redirection header code (301)
      # From 'text editor 'Notepad' Toolbar - File - Save As...
      # File name: ".htaccess" - Note: Use double quotes around all characters
      # Save as type: All Files
      # Click [Save]
      # Upload file to your files directory.

If this does not work for your current P.C., then you can upload file using a FTP program as ".htaccess.txt" and then use FTP to rename.
    • Test forum options, setting, moderation functions, email, modifications and login as other user to see permission settings.
    • Disable plugins from file includes/config.php and add this right under <?php on the next empty line or uninstall any modification(s) that have not been updated to work with new vBulletin stable release

    • Download new vBulletin stable release and unpack it onto computer vbulletin_new_stable_version_L3.8.3.
    • Remove from upload folder upload\install\install.php
    • Upload new vBulletin stable release to overwrite those within 'testvb' directory
    • Next you run upgrade to newly created test site http://your_domain/testvb/install/upgrade.php
    • Test forum options, setting, moderation functions, email, modifications and login as other user to see permission settings.
    • Turn Your Live vBulletin Off while upgrading.
    • Upload new vBulletin stable release and overwrite those on live site.
    • Disable modification using method to test site and remove custom files within folder includes/xml/
    • Next you run upgrade process http://your_domain/forum/install/upgrade.php
    • Test forum options, setting, moderation functions, email, modifications and login as other user to see permission settings.
    • Re-Open site

I would check with the authors for modifications you may have installed, if they work on new stable version 3.8.3

    *Note
Other option is to place .htaccess onto live site and remove from test site and then change vBulletin directory name to the live forum and live forum to 'testvb'

    Upgrading

I have somehow lost my administrator and I don't know anything about php/mySQL ~

The Board's been up for years, but now I have to upgrade. Unfortunately no money either.

I have my FTP and I see the forum, are there instructions for an upgrade anywhere?? My Board's a 3.8 right now, but it'd be nice to be able to do this by myself when needed.

    TIA
