  • reinstalling a clean copy

ok, i have a train wreck of a forums that have been up for 5 plus years. i think it's time for a clean install. if i understand correctly the steps are

    1) back up database
    2) install new forums in new folder
    3) have new forums point to old database (not 100 percent sure how to do)
    4) rename folder of old forums folder to something else?
    5) rename folder of new forums folder to the old name of the old folder
    6) reinstall mods i want to keep
    7) fail or success?

    help.

That is not a clean copy since you are using the old database.

One *unsupported* way you can try is to install a new copy of vB to a new database, then use Impex to import the old data to the new one. Please read the online Impex import instructions here:

    http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/impex

Also please view the 'After the Import' instructions here:

    http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/impex_cleanup

Note: This will change all your existing user, post, thread and forum ID numbers. So all posted links will no longer work, as well as search engine results from prior to this import.
