And as glennybee said this problem is due to your image files being uploaded in ASCII format instead of Binary.

Reupload the files to your server.
Upload all text files in ASCII mode, i.e. .html, .php, .js, .xml, .css.
Upload all non-text files in BINARY mode, i.e. .gif, .png, .jpg, .ico.
I use CuteFTP and I have the transfer mode set to AUTO and I have never had a problem.

More Instllation problems
I have installed the program and now it looks like I have something incorrect.

Also when you click on the forums directory, the page comes up but the graphics are wonky and images are missing

by MDawgI have been using Cyberduck, no problems.
Today during a support ticket it was mentioned to me that I should be using an FTP program that uses ASCII mode to upload the vbulletin PhP files....-
