  • DNS godaddy is useless

    help needed....

every time i contact godaddy i get no help at all. the last time i called i asked the guy if he was any good at DNS settings, an by his own admissions he said 'i'm not the best' lol. that says it all!

    i have 2 C Names at present:-
CNAME metalshapershub @ 1 Hour Edit
    CNAME www ce8df029be3e-004671.vbulletin.net 1 Hour
no A Name.i am pretty sure the value of these were the other way around.

i believe that cloud forums don't really need A names and that is the URL for vbulletin i was given by vbulletin.net

when i search that domain name in my address bar i get nothing. when i search on mxtoolbox i get :-
http metalshapershub.com The remote name could not be resolved: 'metalshapershub.com' (http://metalshapershub.com)
    any ideas?

If the url is supposed to be www.metalshapershub.com then that is what needs setting as the cname.

thanks mark, i now have another question... i am new to all things DNS. if i have my domain name set to www.metalshapershub and point to the url which vbulletin sent me

      like this:-
      CNAME www.metalshapershub.com ce8df029be3e-004671.vbulletin.net 1 Hour

      would this be correct?

i have had it like this before and it didn't work...

      thanks neil

It should be, but we need more information. “It didn’t work” tells us nothing about the problem.

Bear in mind that such changes can take up to 48 hours to take effect, though it’s usually much faster.

I would suggest setting it as above and then we can see what it’s actually doing.

Note that no “A” record should be set.

thanks mark, checking mx toolbox today i get this result with a DNS search:-
DNS Record Published DNS Record not found More Info

          HTTP test result is:-

HTTP ConnectThe remote name could not be resolved: 'www.metalshapershub.com' (http://www.metalshapershub.com) More Info

and a search using the address bar result is:-
          This site can’t be reached

metalshapershub.com’s server IP address could not be found.
          DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN

i will leave it until tomorrow so it has plenty of time to propagate

          thanks neil

The cname record is not set.

This is something only GoDaddy can resolve. It is outside vBulletin’s control.

Add a CNAME record to add a domain prefix that points to another domain name or URL.

Make sure to remove the CNAME with the @ symbol. The @ is a wildcard and will redirect all requests to your TLD (metalshapershub.com). If you did not purchase your DNS through GoDaddy and only have a website with them, you can update your CNAME with the Registrar that maintains your domain. This would skip GoDaddy's DNS altogether.

Is @ wildcard? I thought * was wildcard and @ meant root or something.. or do they both serve the same function?

In this case @ shouldn't be used as a CNAME. It actually means All in this context as far as I am aware.
