I'm looking into two colocation vendors.

One of them is Deru (, which is connected to five major backbones through an OC12 line. They charge $40/month for a 1u design rack lease (plus $100 setup fee) and $135/month for a fully-burstable line which includes 50gb/transfer. They also provide 5 IP addresses initially and can assign more at no additional cost if 80% are used. Deru is a local company. I am eligible to receive a 10% discount. I am also trying to negotiate for a lower monthly rate.

On the other hand, AIT ( offers a $79/month package which includes 80gb/transfer. The setup fee is waived and there is no rack space lease fee. They offer 2 IPs initially (although I don't know how much each additional IP costs thereafter). They also claim to be connected through an OC-192 line. I cannot name a single problem with them except that they're not local.

Having a local vendor is important to us. It allows us to add parts and maintain the server. What would you do in my shoes?

Show the local provider your other offer and ask him if he is able to compete. But for colo I would go for the local one (maintenance).
