PLease help... I have a BIG hosting decision here...

I need help BADLY and NOW!!

Let me start by giving you the dilemma...
My forums are on a dedicated machine now that SUCKS!! Im sure its some ratty old desktop machine. My average SERVER LOAD is about 5-10 and sometimes well over 20! Its ALWAYS SLOW SLOW SLOW. The host says its pulling 1/3 of a T1 line right now. ????

I usually have between 50-70 users online at once. They post alot of pictures though which I think slows it down quite a bit. I started the board Sept 30th 2002 and have "Members: 1,649, Threads: 3,816, Posts: 32,666" So its growing VERY fast and Im sure its be SOOO Much bigger in a few months it will outgrow everything I have planned for it. I get about 26 new registrations a day.

Anyway... There is a NEW server I am supposed to be using (1ghz processor, SCSI ultra wide 10GIG drive, 512-1gig of ram) and before the host will put it online he wants me to sign a year contract and give him $1000 for the year due to teh fact that it will allow more requests to be served and therefore MUCH more bandwidth. This scares me ALOT! A YEAR CONTRACT?

I am not very knowledgeable on this stuff (Im an idiot) and could you folks take a look at what this contract says and tell me if it sounds OK or if Im getting screwed!

My forums are loacted at www.StuntLife.com/forums

It would help a little to know who the host that you are looking to go with is, knowing the host will help others in turn help you by providing you with their experiences.

To be honest with you, I do not see why you would be required to pay $1,000 up-front, although I do not know the complete deal being worked out between you and the place you are hosting with.

Most web-hosts will allow you to pay on a month to month basis, the only reason I would see them asking you to *pre-sign* for a year would be if you were ordering a much larger system (Dual 2.0's, 1-2GB's RAM, 3 or more 18GB SCSI Drives, RAID, ect).

While the $1,000 for a year boils down to only $84/month, I don't see a reason for a year contract on that system to be honest with you.

From looking at the terms, the seem to be a foreign company, would I be correct? If not, then I would suggest going with someone else that can write better terms or could afford a lawyer to write them. Sorry to be picky, but before I became a host, I looked over spelling mistakes to get an idea of who was running the company .

You could check up on venturesonline.com - Jelsoft recently switched too and I checked out their site. They have great colo/dedic. plans - Maybe worth switching too?

just an idea but why not get your own computer and run your own server from your house?
this way you will have full control ,,
ok you need broadband if you have not already got it..

as for not having a static ip address, not to worry as i use microtek for free which redirects to my new ip address every time my ip address changes..

as for operatin system that is upto you,

same as the webserver you use, ie: apachie, or iis on a windows system like xp pro or win2000 or win2003

there are a lot of ways to do it and its not that hard to learn

You may also want to check out Futurequest. They have some high-capacity solutions as well as dedicated. http://www.futurequest.net/Services/Packages/

Their support is outstanding, their value is great, and their community is super helpful.

The link I provided doesn't include dedicated solutions and you would need to contact them to determine your own needs.

Venturesonline, that was the company I was looking for. So vbulletin left them for theplanet. Was any public reason mentioned? I haven't heard people mention VO in a long time.

IIRC, ownership of VO changed and that was one of the reasons.

Oh. And they must have totally changed direction. I just checked their site. Deds are WAY more expensive and no cpanel options.

Out of pure curiosity, why was this thread revived after well over two years?? You think the original poster is still looking for a host by this time?
