  • Host for a large forum

I searched but couldnt find a thread with good enough answers.

Forum has been open a month and currently gets 80,000 pageviews a day. I expect rapid growth for the next year. I am currently with GoDaddy but get random sluggishness. What are some recommendations you guys have and why.

    Hello,

    I would search through here:

    http://www.webhostingtalk.com/

At the very least I would start with a VPS with at least 1GB RAM.

I guess you are on a dedicated server. If not, you will need to. This traffic is above the scope of a shared server and I believe a VPS is not going to be good enough, especially considering that you are growing fast.

If you are looking for self managed server, I would suggest Softlayer. They have reasonable rates and you can easily upgrade to any level, as you grow.

For managed servers, Liquidweb is a good host.

Visit URLJet - they have some of the largest vBulletin forums they host featured on their frontpage. Some have over 10,000+ users online much of the time. They provide managed server and vBulletin hosting, so quite a bit different than your standard webhost.

Happy-hosting can be good for you.
They have provided enough resources and scripts for running forums in a quality and smooth way.

                Hi,

                We use Nimbus: http://www.nimbushosting.co.uk/

They also host some huge forums, including AVForums

We run a Large Forum, and webstore etc http://www.truckdriver-online.com

We used to host with HostGator, and used to suffer fron slow forum loading, occassional hiccups, and some technical faults, so we decided to move to based in the UK.

We use http://www.nimbushosting.co.uk as listed above.

Great thing that persuaded us to move to them was they offered free forum migration service, I didnt have to lift a finger, and to top it all off the website/forum has never run smoother and faster, and wouldnt hesitate to recommend them.

PLUS THEY ARE HALF THE COST OF HOSTGATOR!!!!!!! - Bonus

I'll consider nimbushosting as I am in the UK. Actually there datacenter isnt far from where I live lol.

Anyway, they are the only UK host I have seen who specialise in vB but they seem a bit.. how can I say... well the website doesn't look like they are very big.

                    Any other alternatives?

They aren't far from where I work either, always thought that could be handy if things got out of hand like it has with previous hosts, but they have been fantastic.

If it helps, we used to run vB4 with them (now XenForo) and according to analytics we get approx 30,000 page views per day, this is based on a forum with approx 2m posts. I mentioned above they host AVForums (15m+ posts!) which make us look tiny and they host them with ease

Tim who runs Nimbus used to be the MD of Global Gold if that helps.

I think marblehost services will be fine for running forums with.
They are not pricey and reliable.

                          Which hosting you suggest?
1st we want to start the forum first, which low cost hosting/ shared hosting
but when the forum grow maybe we move to vps
and then next to dedicated server

if possible in single hosting company. so we did not having problems with moving the content.
it is better if they can help moving the data fast/ no long downtime

                          Thankyou

Is a dedicated IP, such as on the bigger options on www.urljet.com/vbulletin-hosting.php really needed? In other words, if everything else is the same, does a dedicated IP make any difference?
