  • Hosting for new forum

Been reading the hosting posts here and noted both Bluehost and Nimbus were highly recommended. What sort of package would be appropriate to start with? Nimbus don't say much on their homepage, I've asked them whether their VPS run Windows or Linux. Bluehost have a lot of options including VPS as well as shared hosting. Would shared be OK to start with?

Also Bluehost seem to be US based and Nimbus UK based. Does location matter? I'm in the UK but currently use low cost server space in the US, however, I'm not sure it's suitable to run a vB forum.

    Any other suggestions welcomed.

We do managed hosting http://www.vbulletin-hosting.org we install, upgrade and more imortantly in light of the recent exploits secure your forum. Although shared hosting you do get unlimited bandwidth and disk. As for location, it doesn't make that much difference just a few milliseconds depending where you are connecting from.

forum software is a heavy thing , even if you just started with it you may fail with most shared hostings .
however you can go with some affordable and trustworthy VPS providers such as http://natcoweb.com

Forum software, VB or otherwise will work very well on shared hosting. There is no need for a VPS at all, in fact hosts like Hostgator recommend you to go from shared hosting to high end VPS or dedicated server, when you over grow. Low end VPS doesn't offer more resources, thanks to overselling in shared hosting. VPS is recommened for root access, that is if you want complete control of the server and is able to spend some time / lot of money on managing the server. Start with a shared hosting account and upgrade as you go.

To be frank, Bluehosting support is average and as a newbie, you may find them not helpful. Nimbus is far better and they are specialist forum hosts, that makes life a lot easier for you.

Finally, local hosting helps a lot. It is not just about speed, it is more about higher ranking in local Google searches. A UK hosting will help you have a better ranking in Google.co.uk. It makes a lot of sense to host near your potential visitors.
