    Server errors...hosting problem?

I upgraded to a vps about 6 months ago from reseller hosting. We have 1GB guaranteed ram but we are constantly getting errors, both "fatal error out of memory" and database errors. Have had a server optimization done by Lynne and that didn't help.

Our host just keeps saying we need more RAM and that we're maxing it out but I find that hard to believe as we're not a massive forum. Around 5000 active members with approx 150 online at any one time including guests. No major addons except for Downloads II and a chatbox.

Any ideas if changing hosts would help or is our current host right, is 1GB guaranteed ram too low for a VB forum of my size?

Our sql database is about 750mb, 250,000 posts. Host says he's never seen a site eat resources so much as ours does.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

I don't do server optimizations, so I'm not sure what you are talking about there. If you want a server optimization done, you should post in the Server Configuration forum and have George optimize your configuration for you.

Please don't PM or VM me for support - I only help out in the threads.

If I post CSS and you don't know where it goes, throw it into the additional.css template.

Perhaps most likely your host is overselling the node. Care to share your host, could help.

          Ah, OK.

It looks like you had your server configured back in June. Has anything changed since then - more/less users, change of PHP/MySQL/apache, anything?

1GB guaranteed ram shouldn't be low for a VB forum of that size. It's more about the optimization.

godaddy did that to me a few years ago, then I googled and found that it's called upselling. maybe it's about your bad neighbors? anyway, I moved to theplanet . much more expensive but pretty good.

                      I'm with Hostmaven.com
Was on reseller for a long, long time but we were hogging resources and getting a lot of lag, hence the move to a VPS.

No nothing has changed, about the same number of users, maybe a little less. Host says he hasn't changed anything.

Errors we're getting are 500 server errors (page cannot be displayed) out of memory errors, fatal errors, couple of examples below. Our php memory limit is already 128M. Have turned off plugins, nothing stops the errors.

Fatal error: Out of memory (allocated 6553600)(tried to allocate 19456 bytes) in home/****/public_html/includes/class_bbcode_alt.php on line 505
Fatal error: Could not obtain file lock in [path]/includes/class_datastore.php on line 786

Had a server optimisation done about 7 months ago, was still getting a lot of errors. Lynne had a look at things for me when I messed up an upgrade and the errors seemed to stop for a few months, now they're back but nothing has changed or been added.

Have checked with them a million times, said everything seems fine their end and that I'm just maxing the RAM. Our current server load is showing 0.20 0.38 0.55, earlier it was all 0.6 something. Not sure if that's any reflection on the RAM issue though.

I've been with them for years, wouldn't like to think they were upselling. Am thinking of moving though, can't stand the hassle much longer but am paid up until March.

It looks like they are overselling, and there current server your on is overloaded.

What does overselling mean? Apparently we're the only ones on the VPS server.
