Hostgator Opinion Please

A forum I used to go to are trying to find a new host because the server was lagging a lot.

IMO, mature (stage) forums should not be on shared servers. Keep in mind, it's not usually the servers fault, nor the hosts, but the other clients on there.

Clients with badly coded sites will bring down the speed of every site on that server, not just their own. So it's usually not the form that's slowing the server down, but others, poorly coded ones.

I don't like them, simply because the larger your forum gets, the slower it becomes, until it just dies.

That's funny. I have three forums and several test forums, all on one server with zero problems.

Great service, good for a budding forum, they have trouble handing bursts of traffic (over 100?) on their shared hosting plans (anything under $25 a month as of this posting).

I use them now, looking for a good host to replace them.

Why not upgrade to a VPS or Dedicated package (with HG)?

If they don't have VPS out already, it should be very soon.

A site would have to be very large indeed before any effect on speed would show.

Hostgator is, by nearly all accounts, an excellent choice for any new forum or beginning webmaster.

Go with StartLogic hosting, I use them for a website I have and god, I had only one downtime and that was it . Very reliable and have won many awards.

Glad to know that Hostgator are good enough I was under impression that they are in market due to their aggressive marketing / advertising policy....haha
Never heard any good about them

I have hosted with them and they are indeed good. Better customer support than any other host in the category and relatively better uptime as well.
