    Your server load has nothing to do with just your site. Shared hosting is shared, the load is everyone on the entire server.

    We moved from Windows 2008 R2 Web Edition onto Debian Squeeze. I really can't over emphasize the joys of moving enough, and I maintain Windows Servers for a living.

    A VPS is much faster than a regular shared instance and much less expensive than a dedicated server. I would try that out first.

    a shared server is NOT "your server" and webhosting is a unix world anybody saying otherwise is a gui noobie

    I used Windows Server 2008 but now I migrate to CentOS Enterprise Linux V5. Really happy with this decision.

    CloudLinux is built for scale/resource sharing/server sharing/cloud, at the cost of performance.
