  • VPS or Dedicated?

I am currently on a shared hosting plan, I finally got that call telling us that we are running up the CPU and causing the other shared plans to run slow.

    This is what we have:
75-150 users online at any given moment.
    Threads: 25,697
    Posts: 450,429
    Members: 1,979
Active Members: 668 (have logged in within the last 7 days)
We use between 50GB - 150 GB of bandwith monthly

Going to be upgrading to 3.7 release candidate, and using member gallery, and profiles etc. All the basics turned on, such as memberlist, whos online, who is reading forums, and who is reading threads, search enabled etc.

The host I have wants to charge me $195.00 for the following dedicated server:
    Single Processor Dual Core Opteron 170 - 2.00GHz - 2 x 1MB cache
    1 GB DDR 400
    2000 GB Bandwidth
    250GB SATA II
Red Hat Enterprise Linux - ES 4 (32 bit)
    cPanel/WHM with Fantastico and RVskin
    Remote Backups
    Server Administration

It is a bit on the high side, not sure that I need a full blown dedicated server for 75-150 members online.

So the question... VPS or Dedicated, what should I really need for that number of members. I need to move our site over right away.

If VPS, who can you recommend? what kind of dedicated ram should I get on a vps? I want to use Cpanel as well.

    Please help

You can get away with A mid size vps with at least 512mb ram. (I would go with 1 gig myself)

When looking at a vps solution pay close attention to ram. 512 is the min. ram you need any less and your site or sites will get into the swap or burstable ram and come to a crawl.
Over the last few weeks cpanel as made some adjustments for vps and their ram usage and has helped.

Site of your size look at 2 servers possibly.

      P4 3.0 GHz
      2 gig ddr 400 ram
      1 or 2 drives 160- 250
      centos5

      or

Amd single processor dual core 4200
2 gig of ddr 400 ram
      1 or 2 drives 160- 250
      centos5

While both of these will work the 4200 will be able to have upgrades done that would help later down the road where the p4 would not.

Providers should have a cost of something like these between 130.00 and 170.00 per month.

Both should do the job for you based on your stats.

Looking at your requirements , you can consider a starter VPS hosting package which you can upgrade easily. You can consider a Dedicated Server when you require more resources but as of now VPS is most suited for you

I am using a VPS with WHM/CPanel and normally have 50-100 users online with around a dozen low traffic sites, using less than half of ram we have.
                  .

if you have the money to go dedicated, go dedicated. In the long run, it'll be the best decision you will ever make, especially if your site is growing (and growing quick).
