Domain at one website and hosting at another?

I have ordered webspace from hostgator.com but they couldn't register the domain I wanted.

I managed to register it with another website...123-reg.co.uk.

I'm new to this so was wondering, do I need to transfer the domain from 123-reg.co.uk to hostgator.com or can they work independantly of each other. I've included my domain in the hostgator settings and changed the dns nameservers on 123-reg.co.uk to include hostgator nameservers.

Is this correct?

Yup, thats all you need to do. In fact I prefer to keep my host and domain registrar seperate!

Just don't forget to point your domains to the right servers.

It is actually better to keep your hosting and domain reg. separate. I have seen many occassions where an issue with host affecting the domain and user struggling to move to another host. With hosting and domains separate, you have everything safe and easy.

Having domains at other end will help you to move to other host easily. some host may give you trouble for moving away from them.

I host my domains with yahoo and use hostgator for webhosting, very easy
