    Onsmart.net sucks - I need a new host

I've spent a couple of hours looking through the threads on this page and I still don't know where to look for a new host.

It would be cool if there was some way to post a listing of all the host experiences where people could rate their experiences and have multiple people give feedback for each host all in one organized place.

Anyways, my current host, www.onsmart.net sucks. I've been fighting various issues for months which result in downtime at least once a week including the following.

    - the host changing my cpanel passwords which also screwed up my SQL password - site was down for a full day before they would address it
    - the host shuts down my site whenever the server load is "too high" although I've yet to see a load higher than 5.5
    - the host is IP blocking "users who connect to the site too much" thinking they are spammers
    - the host blocks any mass-emails that I send
    - the host has disabled my mail server multiple times due to "spamming"
    - SQL will mysteriously "stop running". When I contact support it will all of a sudden start running again and their systems say that everything is operational.
    - etc...

I feel that my site has just grown too large for what my host wants, so I need to find something else. They are unreliable, service is terrible, and customer service is the worst I've ever seen. Most of the time their english is so bad that I don't understand them!!!!

Anyways...I'm currently running vbulletin 3.6.8 and openads' newest version.

I have pruned down to about 1800 members right now (and growing quickly) with 40-60 members online at a time and about 400 members per day.

I have about 32,000 threads and 275,000 posts.

I'm currently using about 1600 MB of disk space and 50 GIGS of bandwidth per month. I have 6 SQL DB's running, but I could reduce that to 3 with a homepage redesign.

I do have an old X_forum that's still running on the site as well, but it doesn't receive any traffic and is only for archive purposes (only about 30 members know it's even there).

I'm also temporarily hosting a YaBB forum for another site. This forum is very small and receives very little traffic (under 1 GIG per month) and will not be moved to the new host.

Do I need a dedicated server, or can I continue to use a shared server with another host?

    Please help.

40-60 are online at any given time (275 max to date including bots, but it was only maybe 75-85 real members). I only have 1800 registered members right now after pruning.

We currently average about 400 unique members each day (that login through vBulletin)

I have about 32,000 threads and 275,000 posts within vB.

I'm currently using about 1.6 GIG of disk space and 45-50 GIGS of bandwidth per month. I have 6 SQL DB's running, but I could reduce that to 3 with a homepage redesign. My current host is only providing 2 GIG of diskspace and 50 GIG of bandwidth with my current program and I'm at the top edge of what they offer.

For the entire site, I'm averaging the following...

      5.7 million hits/mo
      46k visits/mo
      6900 unique visitors/mo

Nixism.com was suggested to me that would put me on a shared server with the following...
      $10.99/mo
      10 GIG Disk /mo
      95 GIG Bandwidth /mo
      Unlimited Sites
      Unlimited Domains
      Unlimited FTP Accounts
      99.9% Uptime Guranteed
      Fast Reply Support
      Immediate, FREE, Set up

I'm thinking about going with them at least for 3 months and seeing what happens....thoughts?

IMO, high end Shared hosting plan will be fine for you with min 10 GB disk space and atleast 100GB Bandwidth. You can upgrade to Dedicated Server when your forum grows. Hope all works fine for you

My opinion? Their "spamming" complaints were emails that I was sending out through the forums.

I would occasionally send emails out to all unconfirmed members or to members who hadn't posted in ~6 months or who hadn't posted at all. I realized that most of these mailings were not going out.

In a nutshell, my site is just too large for my current host. I deactivated a few hacks today to help with the server load, so we'll see how that goes until I can get the site setup on the new host.

I'm going to try out Nixism.com and see what happens. So far, their customer service is top notch!

Okay, well if your site is really big, and will grow in the future. I strongly suggest Media Temple. A lot of major companies like Sony, Nike, Starbucks, etc; use them. Highly reliable, excellent support, unlimited mySQL, webmail, never any downtime.
