Our board is starting to tap the limits of our shared hosting plan. Our provider limits max_user_connections to 20, which is causing db access errors, particularly in the evening.

The board stats are currently something like this:

50-75 users at any given time
    100,000 posts
    3,300 members (600+ per day)
    400-500 posts/day

IIRC, we use about 30GB of bandwidth/mo. The DB is about 170MB. We have about 500MB of files.

We've been looking at the VPS options at, as well as a few other dedicated and reseller plans.

I guess the first question is how much ram do we really need? Most of the VPS options give us more than enough bandwidth and storage, the decision-making really hinges on the hardware demands.

I recommend They don't impose max_user_connection restrictions (which is your problem). They can handle many large scripts such as forums, CMS solutions, and the like... Contact their sales department for a custom solution and do mention your problem so they can gear a plan towards your specs.
