  • Are these guys any good?

These guys are saying that they specialise in vBulletin Web Hosting: http://www.siteground.com/vBulletin-hosting.htm

Does anyone know if they are any good because I am a bit sceptacle myself.

My current situation is that I am on ProBoards, a free remotely hosted forum. It is very good for a free service but I am now looking for a bit more, and vBulletin is undoubtably the best.

I am bit concerned about the cost though. If I started up on vB I would go for the leased lisence which is £48 a year, which I don't mind, but I require a reliable host.

My site is currently on Vistapages. They are generous with MySQL but don't let you use vBulletin forums as they say it is too demanding. Well, you can use them but after a while they will tell you to upgrade to a dedicated server or get rid.

For the sake of how much it may cost, I would prefer to avoid a dedicated server and would prefer to keep to shared hosting, if possible. My forum currently doesn't really have more than 15 or 20 people on at once although they may increase in the coming months because of an association with a magazine.

Could someone please recommend a host who could host a vBulletin forum for me reliably with generous MySQL capacity and at not too higher cost.

Just a final query. Can you spread a forum over multiple databases? And how?

do a search for SiteGround on webhostingtalk.com and see what people are saying about them. Nothing specific comes to mind.

as for spreadking a forum over multiple databases, what exactly are you trying to achieve ?

I am under the impression that MySQL databases do have a space limit on them (correct me if I am wrong) so if that space was reached you may have to spread.

You are talking to a nooB when it comes to MySQL

well even the server has a space limitation. But if you've got a new board and nothing agressive in terms of traffic, it'll take you quite a while to start filling up databases to wanna consider multiple databases...... you can also consider forum pruning

          Rob,

Judging from what you have said, there are many hosting providers that could easily handle your VB forums in a shared environment. I personally would not suggest Site Ground however as no hosting provider can truly offer 500GB's of monthly traffic for $5. They would be losing money. I see this as a red flag.

What is you budget? Do you have a preference to server location?

you know I never thought that made a difference but I realize now it does, ESP if you get dedicated servers.

Well by current host, Vistapages, are saying $39.95 a month for semi-dedicated. They say their shared packages will not be able to cope with vB if your forum gets busy.

I have been quite impressed with Vistapages, and would like to stay with them if I could but it is business sense to find the best offer, which is what I want peoples help with.

My site currently is generally steady most of the time, but can get fairly busy, being a sport based site on match days, generally with around 20-30 online at once and posting quite prolifically. It's nothing major in terms of activity, but I do want reliability, high uptime and a lack of "too many connections" messages (don't we all!). ProBoards is very good on this front, so I wouldn't want my members thinking the move has been a dud in that respect.

Regarding my budget, I would pay the $39.95 a month for Vistapages albeit reluctantly. Ideally, I want to be paying about $10 less than that tops. I am not overly priveleged on the budget front. I would much prefer to pay monthly rather than in a big chunk for a year, with no set up fee. So, I am more in the market for shared packages. If you think I am being unrealistic with this budget do say!

I have a WordPress blog and Coppermine photo gallery as well which would need to transferred over and ran, so multiple databases are required. These are not particularly big databases at all though. The blog is used for publishing articles about once a week and no user comments are allowed, so it isn't very demanding. The gallery doesn't get that busy and users are restricted to one comment per photo.

Regarding server location. Well, I am not really aware what locations are best. I know Vistapages have a few in Beirut.

              Cheers.

PS. I shortsightedly payed for a year of Vistapages two months ago, and am only two months into it. Say I changed host now do you reckon they would refund the other 10 months or swallow it?

encryption, are MJWebHosting shown in your signature any good. The 'Platinum' & 'Extreme' package looks right up my street.

Check their policy on refunds. Chances are that they are not required to give you one at this point.

If you also decide to go with Vista instead of another company, they should be able to apply what you've paid already towards your new semi-dedicated package....depending on their policies that is

They looked ok from what I saw on their plan pages, but note at the bottom of their packages matrix:

"*Pricing on plans listed above are mainly for static html sites and forums with light activity.
Processor hungry applications will be moved to faster servers and charged as applicable."

Right. I only mentioned it because he was talking before about how he was being told he needed a better package because of the performance of his site
