VPS or Dedicated for ~100 users online?

I had 100-300 members online with a VPS and that server has still a little load, now it's running on a dedicated server and my server is in a deep sleep, loads are 0.01 - 0.1, only when the backup runs it is higher. Celeron 2600 with 512MB memory.

For anything over 100 users online, I'd suggest a dedicated server and I would not get anything with less than 1GB RAM. (Even though you may not need it, it is best to be on the safe side)

Hi all,

I'm currently doing 30-50 users online at once (900 cookie) and my host tell me I need to upgrade due to resource usage (they actually flag a site as "excessive resource usage" when monthly hits are over 1million e.g. each smilie is a hit ).

Anyway, I'd like to be able to handle 100+ users in the near future.

Any suggestions as to what kind of server I need? Is a VPS at 512mb RAM enough?
