You can write an awk or sed script to do search & replace on a UNIX/Linux system.

In an non-vB page yes. I was thinking something more like it will be changed in the webserver before sending it to the user, rather than physically changing every file.

My site (maxalbert.com) has a type of changing color scheme. I don't use graphics at all, so it was really simple. I used PHP variables to print my colors, and I just change the values in a global file based on the value of $color.

yes i was viewing your code on that page Max

you uses OOP as well. very good way of doing things.. after i saw your page i went and read a ton on OOP and now i use it for everything.

Oh sure it's easy when you can set the pages up in advance

Just do e.g.

Unfortunately what I have already in my pages is fixed I cannot go through every file and change every instance of a # colour code with the appropriate PHP variable.

Thus I need something I can include in the header which says, take whats on this page and send it to the browser, but not before you've done a search and replace on these particular strings.

I've seen something like this with the (non-vbulletin) gzip compression routines. It stores up the entire page in a cache, then compresses it and sends it to the user. Maybe the compression routine can be replaced with a string replacement routine?

ahh... you mean Output Buffering

You can suck the contents of a file/page into a variable, then do your string replacements.
