I want to have a system where I don't have to update the whole web site each time I add news, so I figured this would be easy. Now has anyone used this and customized it fit their web site? If so is it easy or hard to do?

there are many news scripts available today for displaying news on your websites.
both commercial as well free.

You can search thoroughly on hotscripts for same.
We are using a commercial script on our site www.techarena.in for displaying news.

I will prefer using WordPress today to display news items appropriately.

There are many, many scripts out there.. Some that cost, some that are free... Though I personally code everything on my site, myself. And when I release commercial scripts, I provide documents on how to use them... But a very good one is WordPress as SaN-DeeP stated above.
