Making music available on a site

A friend of mine wants to let vistors to his site listen to some tracks from his new album. He does not want them to be able to download the songs and save them to thier computer.

Does the web server have to have special software to allow this? Or does he encode the song in a way that it is only streamed and not saved?

Im a total newb to this, so any input would be great. Thanks

Quicktime streaming music perhaps, that way you need to do a lot of work in order to record it to your hard drive. Preventing it is very hard ofcourse, everybody has that issue. He is better off streaming like 30 to 45 seconds of his songs, rather then the full thing.

Another alternative I see some sites using is putting it into a Flash movie. Then when you export it, you lower the sound quality so it's still something people would want to listen to, but not download and extract audio from.

Just allow access to one or two songs, then change the songs every so many months.

Or do what floris said , just let them preview each song for 15-20 seconds.

Allot of recording artists are resorting to diliberetly add some popping and cracking in the middle of the track.
