Go with Windows 2003 Server, it performs at least 2x faster than all other operating systems.

I would recommend you try VMWare Workstation for evaluating other O/S's - you can run virtual computers within Windows (or Windows on Linux if you prefer ) - mount the linux ISO to the virtual CDROM, click go, and your linux installtion will fire up in a window on your desktop.

I recommend Debian - if you want an easy life, Open BSD - if your quite linux literate already and want something which is slim and just works, or Suse if all else fails.

Your friends should upgrade to something that is not many, many, years old.

BSD are all good, but I would go with Open for a newbie.

I switched couple of weeks ago from Red Hat 7.2 to Debian 3.0. Not a single problem so far.

    FreeBSD. /usr/ports are your friend.
