I use AVG from Grisoft and each time I boot I can't do anything with my computer for a couple of minutes after I see the desktop because it takes that long to 'plug' itself in. I don't think it's possible to disable these background processes with the free version otherwise I'd switch them off and just do manual scans from time to time. Still I only boot once a day so it's no big deal.

I don't think anyone has mentioned Zoom Player (www.inmatrix.com) or the Core Media Player (www.corecoded.com) yet. Then there's Color Cop (www.datastic.com) and Motherboard Monitor (http://mbm.livewiredev.com).

    I disagree.
I have my mailservers covered with amavisd, spamassassin and ClamAV.

Hence, I don't get annoying virii through my email.

That said, I do a quick scan every other month or so with any of the free online ones.. I just don't feel the need to slow down IO on this machine more than it already is.

"Common Sense" is way more effective than any virus scanner.

I dont have a virus scanner.

I'm generally vigilant enough not to open files from people i'm not expecting stuff from. I only download programs from reliable sources.

Though my sister downstairs thats a different situtation she managed to infect the network twice now with a virus (not my computers) so the other computers in the house run NAV 2003.

    Trillian Pro
    Ultraedit
    Tortoise CVS
    Apache
    MySQL 4
    Latest PHP Snapshot
    Firebird
    Visual Studio
    Adobe Photoshop

    basically in that order

That's exactly what I need to do. I keep meaning to do it though I just forget because I get wrapped up in other stuff.
