I use it sometimes on my board, and I don't think it's weird at all. The unwritten rule says that a casual "m8" is not the same meaning for "sexual partner" so that's pretty much understood.

Well, when I use it its out of curtesy or friendliness the same way the american "buddy" is used.

And the other thing is that this happens all the time. People from various places use differnt words, expressions, dialects, etc. This is all common knowledge mind you.

                      Give an example please.

You can't Use Buddy as mate(sex part)
                      unless you use F*** Buddy.

I dont' mean just one word specifically, and I don't mean just words with "double meanings." What I'm saying is, people from various countries pick up terms & words that people in other places use, and try them out...When I visited UK last month, I learned a few new words, and tried them out here, just to see how they would go. While there, I taught others the expressions and words we use here in the states, and they tested it out..It gets passed back & forth, and even though it may seem strange to use a term/expression we (USA) use, in UK at, it will only seem strange at first, until it gets picked up more.

                          G'day mate.

I think it's not really an issue. It's just a colloquial term used in everyday language, less so in the US, but not unheard of.

it's only weird if the word is only accepted to have one and only one meaning ...

For example, if someone asked me how my trip to the Middle East was, and I said "it was cool, mate", it won't suddenly mean that (a) I consider the person my spouse or (b) it was snowing in Iraq...

what about the word 'gay' it is now used to represent the homosexual person without offending them, but not that long ago if a person was known as 'gay' they were a happy gregarious person and not a homo....

but if you say to someone now 'wow your very gay are'nt you' they would most likely stab you in the eye as take it as a compliment.......

also the word bent, if someone at work points to a roll cage and ays look thats bent i know he means it is all out of shape, howevr if he then says look at that dood he's bent as a nine bob note, i know he doesnt mean he's out of shape.........
