Over qualified

So I apply for this job at a bank as a systems engineer, a job I did for 3 other banks on a contract basis.

I get called for an interview, it went well and then I get a call today from the IT head to tell me that I cannot get the job because I am over qualified. What a ****ing thing to happen! Imagine that! Over qualified.

I am so pissed! When I worked for 1st tennessee Bank they loved my qualifications and this other bank does not want me because I am over qualified? Man, I tell ya, this world is going backwards!

It's another nicer term to say you are not qualified for the job and that you should find another place to work.

Actually her explanation went something like this:
"We are afraid you will not stay with us long since the job does not pay what someone with your qualificationas can earn and this is why we cannot hire over qualified people."

Well think about it, you're not "qualified" for the position because the pay is too low.

In a way its true but I really like the position and the Branch they hired for is one block away from me and they pay all expenses for travel to their other branches really well. And the job is one I really love doing, NT Security setup and administration. The money is not the best but its not bad either and I wanted the job mostly because of the health insurance so I can cover my daughter.

Tolitz, that seems to be going around these days. I think the recession has hit the business sector a bit harder than usual.

Actually, no. Companies use this line quite a bit, and depending on what it is, some do reject applicants for this reason.

Silly, but it happens. I've also heard of many cases when people try to sue companies because of this, but it doesn't get them far.

I've had similar problems when applying for jobs that are beneath me. My masterplan was to get my foot in the door and then work my way up to a role worthy of my qualifications, but the recruitment people weren't interested. What it is, they're not forward thinking enough - they want someone to fill that particular position and stay in it forever when instead they could take on someone with the potential to rise the ranks.

Also different people are responsible for recruiting staff for different divisions so they look out for themselves and not the company as a whole.

It's also a sign that you didnt target your CV / resume for the job application, and were trying too hard to impress them with everything you know, rather than aim for what they actually want.

If you really wanted that job, you should have just told them what they wanted to know, and then sell yourself a little depending on how the interview goes.

You should have a different CV / resume for each kind of job you apply for if you are serious about landing the job, and try to include everything that they mention in the advert.

Hmm - either that, or they saw your vb3dev.com site and were struck with awe, and they felt that you would climb the ladder too fast and take their jobs from them!

Being out of work now myself for a year and a half I can tell you this has become such a standard of being over qualified that it has gotten to the point of me starting to act like a dummy and really down playing my resume as well as being extfemely discuraging not to mention the lack of most places being curtious and at least acknowledging receipt of ones resume or inquiry. Of course when you are asked a technical question in an interview and reply you also have to be careful as I have been baited and trapped more then once thus revealing what I actualy know.

Why can't companies just be happy they have someone who can do a major kick arse job??? Heck I will sign a contract giving them a minimum of 2 years or more dependent on the position.

8 head hunters and 2 contract agencies and still nada. This economy *****!
