Which CPU is better for running vB?

Celeron Pentium III 800mhz

OR

Intel Pentium III 650 MHz

Just wondering.

It may just be my personal bias, but I would put in a 450Mhz P3 in over a 1 Gig Celeron.

I've never, ever, liked Celeron's.

This is somewhat on the same topic, How much better is a SCSI HD then a IDE HD when using vB? Im having a server built up that has an IDE hd, i went with IDE cause SCSI was $150 more a month. I hope to upgrade to a more powerfull server in the future, once wtih SCSI raid 1, but in the mean time, will IDE slow down my forums alot?

There's a reason the SCSI was more expensive .

It won't degrade performance, per say, but it won't improve it.

So the boards will perform better with the Intel, even though the Celeron has more MHZ?

Correct

MHZ isn't the only determining factor in what makes a good processor.

I wouldn't say the major bottleneck in a Celeron is the cache. It's more the frontside bus speed, to my knowledge.

However, I'm not really well versed in the exact purpose of the cache.

i think that was the original problem with the celeron, i think they increased it thought in the recent ones. Still i would stay away, personally for a lower cost but same Mhz i would pic athlon. My laptop only a 350 and it speeds along like no tomorrow.

The original problem was when it had NO internal cache (upto 300 Mhz). Starting with 300a (IIRC), they added 128 kb of full speed L2 cache.

And I assume you mean the Duron, right? Those are cheap... Although all of AMD's products aren't priced too bad.

Actually, on the Celeron line, they're pretty close to 100 Mhz FSB versions... or maybe they already released them. *shrug*

my laptop is only a KII 350, but still goes nicely... they are way advanced from that.. it is the longest lasting computer i have had though.. crashes less often than my PIII 850.
