As I'm using pppd to call my adsl connection via an external modem, we have to load some code or intructions into the modem before it connects. I run the following in the Linux command line:

    modem_run -m -f /dir/adsl-start

It's the programming within the hardware, kind of like a "driver" but read-only and usually flashable.

I think its the program embedded into the modem that instructs the modem what to do.
