Our pro version requires that a person is a vB member and automatically logs a person into the chat system when they enter a room.

I'm a 56k-er and those flash applets load very quickly. You're right about the bandwidth, though it's not an issue for me since Phatt Chat is always a ghost town anyway (I haven't linked to the other one because I don't know if I'll continue using it).

What I'd really like is a decent PHP-flash applet with a proper registration system so people can't login and pretend to be someone else. All the ones I've seen are either bloated and buggy or amateurish. phpMychat is horrible IMO.

I've also got an IRC chat room setup, but I'm not a big fan of IRC and newbies are put off by all the commands and info overload when they login.

The only problem I have with refreshing ones is that "click, click, click" they always make..

No matter, they use the same amount of bandwidth as all others...

Hasrdly any difference and many people cannot load flash and on dial up connections flash is a *****.

Another option is to use one which combines PHP and flash (these don't need to refresh either). You can demo two which I've setup here...

If your server supports ASP, a good one to look out for is Pipey's Flash Chat.

I'm sure there is a way in php, I'll check it out more shortly, when I get linux up and running.

Isn't having a 'refreshing' chat script committing bandwidth suicide?

pHpLords.Net, that's actually pretty nice, though it'd be nice if it wasn't a "refreshing" one.
