  • stupid q about pics in sigs...

Ok, in signatures i see pictures that display their forum stats (members, posts, and threads)... now some of them even say "live stats"... how do they get the pic to update? do they just change it every now and then and upload it? whats the story? lol, i know this is a stupid question... any response is appreciated, thank you.

They have a cron job running on their server which uses GD to compile an image every X minutes (or hours) with updated stats. They're not live unless they set a cron to run every second

There's a hack for it over at vbulletin.org

well mine runs every five mins and as i dont have many users who post its pretty much upto date all time but like n9ne says you would have to have the cron running continuously on a busy board.

one thing is a little confusing to me tho ... since the stats update automatically whenever the image gets retrieved, why do the cron job at all to update it every 15 minutes? I didn't configure the cron job yet my stats are always up-to-date...

Not if you don't want 3 queries run to retrieve all the information every time the image is accessed. People with very active boards that have load problems will opt for the cron job that runs the 3 queries at once and saves the image to a static file which is much easier on the server.

Why use a cron-job? You could just cache the file and check it's creation time, if it's over X minutes old, create a new file and overwrite it.

Yeah, a simple PHP script could do it quite easily, no need for a cron job.

I don't think it's possible to get the create time in Linux...
