I tend to make a public example of them. If they spam more then one thread at a time then I remove all threads except the first one and change their url to spam.com's site and leave a link to this wav file that repeatedly sings "spam, spam, spam".

In a few cases they actually really didnt mean any harm so I talk to them and on a case to case basis decide if i will allow it. some URL's have been added to my censored word list...like outwar for example.

I allow links in signatures, but not when the links are to porn sites. Also, when the link is via an image that either takes a while to load or stretches out the screen at lower resolutions, I'll usually ask them to kill the image or downsize it.

For people who just want to be members to spam, I've got a special place for them, and just recently added a special smilie for the use against those and other annoying people we come across...

Unfortunately it'd probably be against the Jelsoft rules to link to it here, but I can give you an approximate abbreviation... How about a nice cup of... STFU

I put this in my membership rules:

Members are not permitted to advertise other sites on these forums. Site owners may advertise their site at a cost of £10 per message per day. Invoices will be issued on a weekly basis. By registering on the forums, you have agreed to be bound by this clause.
When I am in the mood, I send out emails to spammers "thanking" them for their business, and reminding them an invoice will be sent out to the address the domain name is registered at.

Most of the time, I get an apology by reply, and they return to my site and remove the link

I'm brand new, but I do allow links in sigs. I do not allow post content to contain advertising, but I don't have a problem with sigs, especially if is for non-related content.

We allow advertising in signatures, but nowhere else. Occasionally someone will start a thread asking for websites on a particular topic, and that is fine.

There is an opposition board to us who's members all hate us and thing it is highly amusing to come to our forum, post a spam and then time how long it takes for it do get deleted, then report back to their friends about how clever they are

I know the feeling, Mark. Except there's a couple members who do that who were members from the beginning, not coming from an opposing board. Kinda makes you wonder just how much time they have on their hands.

There's also one from a forum with the same abbreviation as ours who kept signing up with a link to his website as his username, four times... I renamed all the users and banned them, and eventually had to ban his entire IP cause he kept signing up and evading the email bans.

They can have a link in their signature to their site, even with a description. But when it shows 'cheap service, now without setup fee, click here: www.blah' then I won't allow it. There is a difference between subtle and obvious.

Besides that, no, they spam, they get a warning, then a ban.
