Intel debuts 3 Gig P4 this week

We purchased two 2.4GHz systems at work a few weeks ago, and those things fly. I can't imagine a 3 Gig proc, and with this Hyper Threading stuff no less! Insane.

I wonder how big these chips are? The industry seems to have speed under control; I think the next frontier is who can make the smallest chips.

In Billy Gates' magical "computers everywhere" fantasy land (which is likely inevitable...), size will matter.

And I'm still waiting on the Athlon XP 2800+ to come out...sad...

This chip is going to be extremely expensive, however.

I'd rather they make other components smaller, like RAM or hard drives. The CPU is tiny as it is.

A bigger, but smaller hard drive would absolutely rock.

I think Toshiba's 1.8 inch is the smallest besides the IBM Microdrive

For computers, this is true. But think outside the computer. Think in terms of handheld PC's, Cell phones, kitchen & auto appliances, etc.

But most importantly, think of coffee makers. You just can't brew a cup of coffee fast enough, you know?

I don't drink coffee, therefore, this does me no good.

                    Yeah, that's very true.

Just imagine though, your next powerful workstation or desktop coming in the size of a PDA.

They're getting silicon wafers printed with pathways only one atom thick now. They aren't very complex yet, but it's a start. When they perfect the process, they'll get 1 trillion switches on one square centimeter. And by the way, the switches are single molecules. Incredible.

You know, I was in Gibsons (Local PC shop) the other day buying a processor for my new motherboard for my old pc . It was a Intel only motherboard, so I had to choose between P3/P4 or Celeron. The cheapest Intel P3 they had was £106.08 :O. So I ended up buying the celeron 1.2ghz for £55.67 and its working fine
